Portage Glacier Alaska Raining when we arrived. Planned to take boat trip to glacier. Decided against it and went on to better sites with nicer weather. Okay, I wimped out because of some rain... Took some photos in and around the glacier. Easy drive from Anchorage. Several years ago I had a special moose permit for that area. My wife , myself and another fool started across Portage lake in a canoe, in a COLD rain and the wind was blowing sideways. We managed to dodge the icebergs and finally got across. That was the easy part. I shot a nice bull about 8:00 am and got it ready to pack 3/4 of a mile. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We finally got the moose packed to the canoe about 2.00 PM and after three trips back and forth across the lake we were finally loaded in my truck at about 8:00 pm. All that went on while I was explaining to the local Federal lawman that I did indeed have a special drawing permit. That moose was the best meat I ever tasted. I wish I had another one just like right now. Bert Keyes, Homer, Alaska Rocky Mountain Profiles Colorado Ghost Towns and Colorado Photos – Niwot Colorado |
